For many, especially those undergoing treatment for addiction and mental health issues, it can be difficult to express feelings verbally. Addiction is rarely the only struggle one’s facing when they enter treatment; it’s often coupled with some type of mental health disorder like PTSD, depression or bi-polar disorder. Patients bring an array of emotions to treatment – anger, sadness, regret. Others are hopeful, determined and ready for a new life.

One powerful way to bring emotions to the surface is through songwriting therapy. Songwriters of all genres have used life experiences to create beautiful lyrics, drawing their experience with love, heartache, hopes and dreams. At JourneyPure Bowling Green we incorporate songwriting into our experiential therapy program. Experiential therapies offer patients an interactive, collaborative way to tap into underlying emotions that traditional talk therapy alone may not reveal.

Songwriting Therapy at JourneyPure Bowling Green

Tamara Stewart lends more than 30 years of songwriting talent to offer a unique experience to JourneyPure patients. Her songwriting sessions are an incredible thing to witness. She encourages an open and collaborative group effort, as patients share openly about their past with addiction, trauma and recovery. Stewart captures the words flowing throughout the room.

Once the whiteboard is filled with words, the songwriting begins. Stewart leads the group into making these powerful words into lines, a process she describes as guiding to “rhyme and truth.” Collectively, the group writes a song and based on the song’s message and tone, Stewart pulls out her guitar and adds the musical component. If the words are powerful and determined, the music will be more upbeat than if the song speaks to a more sensitive subject.

“It is quite a remarkable process, when patients discover, that together, openly, they can communicate their fears, pain, shame and hope into a format that includes rhyme and structure,” Stewart said.

Each patients gets a copy of the song to take home as a treasured piece of their road to recovery.
