Customized Addiction Treatment Plans

If you are seeking addiction treatment in Kentucky this is a brave first step in changing your life for the better. When someone is in active addiction, their overall quality of life suffers. From physical to mental health, to social interactions, to relationships with family and friends, addiction leaves its mark on every area of a person’s life. And everyone around the addict impacted. The good news is, recovery is possible, and we are here to help.

There is no one single form of addiction treatment that meets everyone’s unique needs. Each person bears their own set of challenges. Some may be living with the effects of childhood trauma, which can include physical abuse, sexual abuse, or abandonment. Others may be suffering with PTSD from a tragic life event, such as military deployment. According to a 2014 survey conducted by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 7.9 million people were living with addiction and a co-occurring mental health disorders.

We offer customized addiction treatment plans to ensure that each patient is receiving the best care plan; one that addresses all of their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. JourneyPure Bowling Green operates under a dual diagnosis model, meaning each treatment plan will include evidence-based solutions for the addiction and any psychological impairments. Treating these co-occurring mental health disorders simultaneously produces better overall outcomes for the patient and reduces the chance for relapse.

What is Addiction?

It may be difficult for someone with no substance abuse problems to understand why some people become addicted to drugs or alcohol to the point where they can’t stop using and become destructive in their behavior. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) says years of scientific research has debunked the mindset that addiction is a moral flaw or simply a lack of willpower. Multiple studies on the human brain prove that addiction is a disease that directly impacts the brain’s functioning, which in turn impacts behavior. Addiction is actually a chronic disease, characterized by compulsive drug use despite the consequences, and by relapse. Relapse doesn’t necessarily mean the treatment isn’t working. It means much like other chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, that treatment should be ongoing and adjusted based on the patient’s response. According to NIDA, more than 23 million people 12 and over needed addiction treatment in 2009 alone. And unfortunately, only 11 percent of those ever received the treatment they needed.

When a person uses drugs, the brain is excited by the excess dopamine surging thorough. This is the “feel good” chemical affects the brain’s reward circuit, the area of the brain that responds to pleasurable activities, such as eating or sex. When this reward circuit is overstimulated with drugs, the user’s brain is telling them to take more and more. Eventually, the user can’t reach the same level of high they are used to, meaning they’ve reached a tolerance to the drug. This can be dangerous and can lead to overdose because they begin taking larger doses to achieve the high they desire.

Long-term drug use changes the brain in many ways. From judgment to decision-making, to memory and behavior, drugs leave their mark. Once the user reaches the point of addiction, they continue to use despite knowing these consequences. At this point addiction treatment may be necessary to help manage withdrawal symptoms and to create a plan for long-term recovery.

Addiction Treatment: What to Expect

Addiction treatment at JourneyPure Bowling Green is about getting our patients healthy and keeping them healthy. First, we need to make sure the drugs or alcohol are safely removed from the system. Treatment usually begins with a medically-monitored detoxification, depending on the patient’s clinical assessment. We do not have onsite detox but partner with several healthcare facilities to ensure our patients get the exceptional around-the-clock care they need during this difficult period of the recovery process. Our patients’ clinical assessment will also help us determine the level of care that is appropriate. The main differentiator in levels of care is the period of time the length of programming time.

We offer partial hospitalization program (PHP) and outpatient services at our Bowling Green facility. For each level of care, our patients can expect only the best in evidence-based treatment methods and a small staff-to-patient ratio.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) – PHP programming can be offered as a patient’s primary level of care or as a step-down for someone who no longer needs a residential, 24-hour a day setting. Programming for PHP’s vary but are usually five days a week, six hours each day.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) – IOP offers another step-down level of care for patients, with reduced time in programming. IOP operates a few times a week, with three-hour sessions.

Holistic Therapy, Committed Staff

Addiction treatment is more than just removing the substance from the body. Our staff is committed to bring each of our patients back to optimum health – mentally and physically. Our holistic approach to addiction treatment is aimed to strengthen the mind, body and spirit. Through 12-Step education, individual, group, experiential and other behavioral therapies, we will dig deep down to the root cause of the destructive behavior and provide the coping strategies needed to live a life of sobriety outside of treatment. We also incorporate nutrition and exercise into our recovery program because a strong mind and body is more likely to overcome addiction and avoid relapse. In addition, each patient will experience:

  • Individual therapy – One-on-one therapy utilizing different methodologies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or dialectical behavioral therapy, helps patients unroot the cause of the addiction and develop coping strategies for long-term recovery.
  • Group therapy – our therapists create an atmosphere that allows for honest and open sharing amongst patients. It is a powerful way to connect others with similar life experiences and to help our patients understand they are not alone.
  • Experiential therapies – we offer art and songwriting therapy, equine therapy, and regular yoga classes
  • 12-Step education – patients are guided through the 12 steps of recovery
